Not sure what to wear?
Planning a family photo session is an exciting time, but figuring out what everyone should wear can sometimes be a bit stressful. Don't stress! Here are some simple styling tips to help you and your family look and feel your best during your photo shoot.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days when everyone wore identical outfits. Instead, opt for coordinating colours and styles that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a colour palette of 3-4 colours and mix and match different pieces within that range. This approach adds visual interest and harmony to your photos.
Consider Your Location
Think about where your session will take place and choose outfits that suit the environment. For example, if you’re having your photos taken in a park during autumn, earthy tones like mustard, burgundy, and forest green will look beautiful. For a beach setting, light and airy colours like white, blue, and soft pastels work wonderfully. If you're not too sure, reach out and I would be happy to make some suggestions.
KEEP COMFORT IN MIND
Comfort is key, especially for children. Make sure everyone is dressed in outfits they fit into and feel comfortable in. Avoid clothing that is too tight or scratchy, as discomfort can easily show in the photos. Opt for breathable fabrics and clothes that allow for movement, unless going for a winter look.
ADD LAYERS AND ACCESSORIES
Layers and accessories can add depth and personality to your photos. Consider adding jewellery, boho hats, or in colder themed sessions cardigans, scarves, vests, beanies to enhance your outfits. Just be mindful not to overdo it – one or two accessories per person is usually enough.
Choose Timeless Over Trendy
While it’s fun to wear the latest fashion, choosing timeless pieces will ensure your photos look great for years to come. Simple, classic clothing tends to photograph better and won’t look dated as styles change.
Pay Attention to Footwear
Shoes matter! Make sure everyone’s footwear is clean and fits well with their outfit. For outdoor sessions, consider how practical your footwear is for the location. For example, heels might not be the best choice for a sandy beach or a muddy park.
Avoid Large Logos and Busy Patterns
Clothing with large logos, characters, or busy patterns can be distracting. Instead, opt for solid colours or subtle patterns that won’t take attention away from your faces. Small prints or textured fabrics can add interest without overwhelming the photo.
Plan Ahead and Try Everything On
A few days before your session, have everyone try on their outfits to ensure everything fits well and looks good together. This will give you time to make any necessary changes and avoid last-minute stress. If you are buying new clothes allow for enough time to grab some back up options if the initial outfits don't fit or look the way you were hoping!
Include Personal Touches
Incorporate items that are meaningful to your family. Whether it’s a special piece of jewellery, a beloved hat, or matching family bracelets, personal touches can make your photos even more special.
